Volunteer to Rebuild
In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, Jesus calms turbulent waters. Matthew 25:31-46.
Superstorm Sandy was the most destructive storm New Jersey has ever experienced. Over the span of two days Sandy left 2.7 million New Jersey residents without power, 253,000 households with sustained damage and tens of thousands of homes uninhabitable. Sandy disrupted or discontinued thousands of jobs and impacted tens of thousands of people’s lives. A storm this size calls for many partners working together to bring relief and recovery to New Jersey residents. In the face of such devastation, The United Methodist Church will serve as a vital partner in recovery efforts, to witness to the love of God for all people. We seek to serve vulnerable and marginalized populations who otherwise may not receive assistance. Thank you for considering volunteering to help those in need.
To start the volunteer process, please fill out the form available here. Only one form needs to be completed per team leader, regardless of the number of teams you want to bring. We will call you to confirm your interest as soon as possible. If you do wish to schedule more than one team please let us know when we contact you, or indicate in the comments of the application. If you have previously registered and would like to now bring another team, please contact us at email@example.com to schedule directly with a Sandy Recovery staff member.
A donation of $250 per team is requested after your application is accepted, as a deposit on your stay. Donations can be made via check or PayPal.
We schedule teams in the order the dates are requested and consistent with our volunteer needs in that timeframe.
While we can work with teams of any size, an ideal team size is 10 members or less, allowing for maximum flexibility in scheduling, hosting and tasks.
We will accept youth teams (under age 18) on a case by case basis. Acceptance of youth teams depends on the ages of the team members, the adult/youth ratio, and the nature of the work available on the dates requested. We strongly recommend that youth be no younger than 16, however youth ages 14 and 15 can be part of your team with special permission. We recommend a 1 adult to 5 youth ratio (gender appropriate) for ages 16 and over and require a 1 to 3 ratio for youth ages 14 and 15. In accordance with the UMC safe sanctuary policy, all adults accompanying youth must have verified backgrounds checks prior to arrival. Adults with a youth team should also have some construction knowledge.
All the required forms must be submitted for each team member, prior to your arrival. Youth require an additional form that must be notarized. The final requested donation is $20 per night per volunteer for housing plus $100 for building materials for the construction projects (for a total of $220 for 6 nights, for each volunteer.) Your deposit will be used toward this donation. Donations can be made via check or PayPal.
As soon as you or your team is confirmed for a date and location you will receive the detailed information, and will be able to go online and enter your team members and complete a skills assessment. This needs to be completed four weeks prior to your scheduled arrival.
All provided housing will have—
- Cots for sleeping (volunteer must provide sleeping bags, linens, towels, pillows)
- Kitchen facilities. Volunteers are asked to provide their own meals, either by cooking or eating out. Each week, two meals will be provided to teams by A Future with Hope.
Volunteers need to provide their own transportation.
